William Mumford Stirling, Jr. (Bill), passed away with family at his side under the care of Clarity Hospice at the age of 90. Bill, a life-long resident of Baton Rouge, served in the U. S. Navy on the #788 USS Hollister as a radar specialist. He raced sailboats and was a founding member of the Pelican Yacht Club at False River. He served on the Vestry and Associate Vestry at St. James. As a young man he was a member of the Baton Rouge Sea Scouts. He was an avid camper/traveler who enjoyed visiting the many National Parks across the country with extended family and friends. Bill is survived by his constant companion and the love of his life of 67 year: Betty Jean Poirrier Stirling and by his brother and sister-in-law: Louis and Shirley Stirling and their children and grandchildren, and his brother Lawrence Stirling, and his brother-in-law and his wife Hillary and Nancy Poirrier and their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his sons and daughters in law: Chip and BB; David and Terry of Mobile, AL; Mark and Robin of Auburn, AL; and Lee and Kim of Mobile, AL. Daddy Bill was adored by his grandchildren: Will and Karen Stirling and their children: Taylor and Philip Edwards and their son Eli; Carmen, Josie, Jillian Andres, and Ryan Stirling of Denham Springs, LA; Casie Stirling of Dallas, TX; Camy Stirling of Brevard, NC; John Stirling of Vallejo, CA; Lee and Renee Stirling of Tampa, FL. and Lindsey and Victor Goncalves and their children Olivia, Nathaniel, Sebastian, and Wynn of Birmingham, AL; Christopher Stirling and Corey Stirling of Mobile, AL. Christian Stirling of Auburn, AL; and Jessica Stirling of Mobile, AL.; Miller Jensen of Baton Rouge, Daria McDonald, Anthony Gomez, Danny Gomez, and David Gomez and their children: Kenny, Julia, Jacob, Anissa, Malena, Emi, and Kayla. Bill was preceded in death by his parents William and Bessie Stirling and grandson, Ryan Hillary Stirling. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 5, 2017; 10-11:30 at St. James Episcopal Church 205 N 4th St. Baton Rouge, LA. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Ralph Howe of St. James Episcopal Church and Rev. Chandler Willis of First Presbyterian Church of Lake Charles. Burial will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name could be made to the “We Care” ministry of St. James Episcopal Church, St. Vincent dePaul of Baton Rouge, or the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home 7200 Desiard St. Monroe, LA 71203.
