November 17, 1944 – July 27, 2017 – Known to everyone as “Bart”, he was a much beloved husband, father and grandfather. He was born in Baton Rouge, LA to Alyce Lyons and Sidney B. Bennett several months premature. God had big plans for him as he survived premature infancy during a time when many did not. He graduated from Lee High School, B.S. from University of Southern Mississippi , and M.Ed. from Louisiana State University. He retired from the East Baton Rouge Parish School system where he worked his entire 47-year career and was instrumental in technological advances. He was an elementary and middle school teacher and administrator for many years, sharing his love of science and math. He also began teaching computers in 1980’s, before many homes had a computer. He met Ruth Anne Dobbins, the love of his life, during a tour of Europe, and they married in December 1969. Together they had 3 daughters: Claire Gahagan (Russell E.,III), Adriane Bennett, and Sarah Pluck (Thomas). He was Daddy Bart to three grandchildren: Sidney Claire, Anne Marie and Russell Edward Gahagan, whom he adored. At First Presbyterian Church, he served the Lord as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Elder. Throughout his life he was a volunteer firefighter, on the board at Pennington YMCA, a long-standing member and current President of the Cajun Clickers Computer Club and more recently, member of Louisiana Photographic Society and Baton Rouge Astronomical Society. He could fix almost anything-automotive, electrical or mechanical. He was outgoing and kind to those he met, and he loved to help friends, family and neighbors. He loved to travel in his RV taking Ruth Anne to do genealogical research, or taking her and her friends various places. He loved to take his grandchildren out to dinner for their birthdays and told them to get “anything that they wanted.” He is survived by wife, daughters, and grandchildren, and brother, Evert Bennett. He is preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Robert Cox, his sisters, Bethany and Alicia Bennett, and brother Martyn Bennett. With respect to those in need, his bones were donated in tribute to his wife and daughter who were at one time in need. Memorial service to be conducted by Rev. Jim Solomon at First Presbyterian Church on Monday, July 31 at 11:30 a.m., preceded by visitation from 10:00-11:15 a.m. Reception to follow services in the parlor. Burial in Young Family Cemetery in The Plains at a later date.
