John Gregory Michiels was born in Evanston, IL on July 21, 1954 and left us on April 8, 2017 to wait with welcoming arms for the rest of us. He attended Sam Barthe School for Boys and graduated from De La Salle High School in 1972. He was a graduate of LSU and worked for ExxonMobil Chemical and JG Michiels Inc. as an engineer where he was on the design team for petrochemical plants in the US and abroad. Greg helped anyone who needed anything and was always up for fun. He was captain of De La Salle and LSU swimming teams and attended LSU on a full swimming scholarship. He was also president of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Greg enjoyed restoring his 1920’s craftsman home in the Garden District of Baton Rouge and vintage MG autos. In addition, he was an accomplished ballroom dancer, a member of the Tucumcari Ding-a-Lings, a first class hot air balloon chaser, a square dancer, and a space-cadet. He loved Tigger and had the energy and fun-loving nature to prove it. Greg is survived by his favorite dance partner, Melinda Michiels; other musketeer, Noupie Normand; sister and brother, Bobbie Jo Smith Berry and Bill Berry; sister, Joy Bonvillain, and shared children, Bret and Maree Jeanne Funk, Megan and Dave Prosser, Jordan and Evan Crows, Stephen “B. Michiels” Black, and many grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by his siblings, Joan McCullough; Chip Michiels and Joan Heauseler, Robbie and Pam Michiels, and Larry and Melissa Michiels, and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Among the angels greeting him are his parents, Leo Peter Michiels, Jr. and Nancy Morarity Michiels, other mother, Betty Bankston Smith Downing; other daddy, Millard E. Smith, and sister, Danis Black, and his arm candy pup, Maggie. We know they are dancing together in happiness to good Cajun music. We will smile thinking of that even though we miss him as the leader of our Second Line. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Rabenhorst Funeral Home Downtown, 825 Government Street, from 5pm-8pm. Visitation will resume at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9am until the funeral service at 11am. Interment to follow at Magnolia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please take your favorite partner dancing. “Angels do not die, as far as we know. They do not lose their loved ones, young or old, to another place. But they hold onto the loved ones we have lost until we can get there to hold them again.” –Unknown
