Joan M. Wallyn was born on October 5, 1960 to Dr. Richard Joseph Wallyn and Helen Marie Bowater Wallyn. She grew up in Flossmoor, IL, completing her formative education there and graduating from Homewood-Flossmoor High School in 1978. She attended and graduated from Valparaiso University, in Valparaiso, IN, with coursework completed in Philosophy, Theology, Business and finally a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. In 1982 she moved to Baton Rouge, LA to begin to develop a career in Social Work. She received a Masters Degree in Social Work from LSU in 1983 and went to work as an employee of the State of Louisiana. She became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Board Approved Supervisor during her career. She retired in 2005, but maintained her license to practice and remained involved in community affairs including volunteering with St. George and the Red Cross during crises and running to be seated on the East Baton Rouge School Board in 2014. Aside from work, Joan loved animals and remained involved with horse programs and activities in her area. She also provided a home to numerous cats, and advocated for the rights of pet owners and their “children”. She enjoyed painting, reading and studying. She also focused on strengthening her relationship with God through prayer and action, participating in classes at St. George Church, bible study and rosary group. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, mother and three sisters: Jenny, Susie and Anne. She is survived by her father and stepmother Colette, sisters Mary and Margaret, and her brother Christopher (Cathie). Joan will be missed by her Uncle Bob and Aunt Carol as well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She is also proud to have called Tommy Benton, Dianne Burris, Valerie Fulmer, Gary Rainaldi, and Ben Zamanian true friends during her life. There will be a Funeral Mass at St. George Catholic Church on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 11:00am with a family and friend gathering time prior to the mass from 9:30 – 11:00am. Weep not for me, because all is as it was meant to be in accordance with God’s plan. Go and love one another.
