“Live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called that you may inherit a blessing.” 1 Peter 3:8-9. James Barrett Benton was born on February 23, 1962, in Baton Rouge to Thomas H. Benton and Neva “Bootsie” Benton. He was the third child out of six. After his mother’s death and his father’s re-marriage in 1973 to Jodie Fulton Odom, Barrett loved being the fifth of ten children. He graduated from Louisiana State University in 1984 and, like his father and grandfather before him, was awarded a Juris Doctorate from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1990. He was briefly legal counsel to the Labor Committee at the Louisiana Legislature before joining his father at Benton, Benton & Associates. He met his wife, Nadine Frick, at LSU while volunteering with Young Life. Barrett traveled, danced and prayed his way through a life abundantly lived. If friendship were currency, no one was ever wealthier. He was a teller-of-tales, a fierce advocate, a listener. He loved making people laugh, and gave his heart without reservation. He was a man who truly lived. He is sorely missed among the living, and joyously welcomed home by his Savior. James Barrett Benton, 55, went to be with his Lord on August 26, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Nadine Frick Benton; his children Jessica Benton Milburn and husband Bill, Julia Benton Bueche and husband James, Michael Barrett Benton, and Emma Elizabeth Benton; two future grandchildren; his parents Thomas Harrison Benton Sr. and Jodie Odom Benton; his siblings Karan Benton York (Frank), Michelle Odom Nesbitt (Scott), Thomas Benton Jr., James Odom Jr. (Karen), Molly Benton Laville (Joey), Catherine Benton McCallum (Mark), David Odom (Patricia), Christopher Odom, and Jeffrey Benton (Denise); and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his mother Neva Cook Benton, his mother-in-law, Connie Menkens Frick, his sister-in-law, Michele Frick Zander, grandparents Fred G. Benton Sr. and Emma Cockerham Benton, William J. Cook and Neva Lorrio Cook, and uncles Kenny Riviere and Fred G. Benton Jr. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at St. Jude Catholic Church. On Thursday, August 31, greetings and eulogies begin at 10:00 AM with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Big Buddy Program of Baton Rouge or Young Life. “Let them praise his name with dancing, let them sing praises to him with the tamborines.” Psalm 149:3.
